Introduction

Hello everyone!

My name is Samantha Hatch, and I am excited to be back in school. It's been a little while (a long while) since I've been in the university routine. I am working on a Multidisciplinary degree that combines Information Studies with Management Information Systems. Currently, I work as a paralegal and records administrator for the state of Oklahoma. This degree should help me obtain a position with a private e-Discovery and information governance firm. At least...that's the plan!

While e-Discovery seems like a far cry from Mythology, I am also excited about this course. In one of my past lives, I was an English major. I really loved looking at ancient cultures by studying their heroes, their legends, and their religions. Even though my career path is heading in a far more technological direction, I hope this class will be a fun mix of technology and classical subject matter.

My hobbies right now include buying paint supplies and watching Youtube videos about acrylic paint pouring. I haven't yet created anything, but I have BIG plans! I love the way every pour comes out so vastly different. It is sometimes not what the artist expects, but still beautiful. It also seems to take far less dexterity than traditional painting which will give me a better shot at success. Take a look at this compilation if you want.

Someday I hope to graduate from the videos to actually making art. We'll see how that goes now that I have a full-time job, a full-time school work load, and a full-time child. Speaking of which, this is Isabel, the human, and Rory, the cat-icorn. Isabel's hobbies include torturing the cat by making her wear unicorn horns. I tend to encourage this behavior by taking copious amounts of pictures. I once hoped that Rory and Isabel would be friends. Then I let Isabel dress her in various outfits and hats. Rory bears the indignity as graciously as possible. However, Rory makes it clear: they are not friends, and she is not amused.

That's all for now. I look forward to learning more about all of you!

  1. Hi Samantha!

It is great to hear about your future career plans! They all seem so interesting and I hope everything works out! I also love watching art videos, and occasionally attempt to create my own stuff. I'd love to see a picture of your painting once you get around to it! I also thoroughly enjoyed the cat-icorn photo.. That made my day!

  2. So nice to meet you, Samantha!
I have to admit, it took me a couple tries when reading about what you are majoring in and what your career goals are upon graduating because it sounds so intricate, but also very fascinating! It is so exciting to have found another person who loves acrylic pours, they look so fun and end up being so unique every time I see a person do one. Your picture is absolutely adorable and I love the "cat-icorn" idea, I'll have to try that some day on one of my cats! Hope you have a great semester!

  3. Hello, Samantha—it’s nice to meet you! Sounds like you have a very busy schedule this year, best wishes! I’m also excited about this class, and since it’s online it definitely makes it easier to delve into myth research. As an artist who watches many arts and crafts videos on YoutTube, I can relate (ha ha). I’ll have to check out acrylic paint pouring, the results are beautiful! But if you’re interested in trying your hand at art, I’d say jump on in! Right now I’m taking a painting and printmaking class, which I highly recommend. Anyways, I’m excited to see your blog posts in mythology and folklore and how the course inspires you. Until then, take care!

  4. Hi Samantha,

First, I love that you dressed up your cat. I have a precious dog of my own that some would say I treat like a child. I think that having an animal can really help keep you company and relaxed when you are overwhelmed. It is really awesome that you are working for the State and now have the opportunity to come back for your degree. I also work during school and know it can be very overwhelming to get in a routine of balancing work and school. While it is very helpful that this class is online, I am ready to get a weekly routine of all my other classes also. I have never been much of an artistic type but that video you attached makes me want to start learning and looking into it. Have a great semester!

  5. Oh, I thought your job sounds so cool, Samantha! I really glad that MDS approach is letting you create a degree approach here that works for you and which connects up with your career goals. As you can probably guess, I am very interested in the world of digital information, and I came very (very very VERY) close to going to SLIS to get an MLIS degree... but then this online teaching job opened up, and I ended up going down this path instead. And listen, have you read this amazing book by James Gleick, The Information: A History, a Theory, a Flood...? If not, I can highly recommend it. There are not too many books that I re-read a second time immediately upon finishing it the first time around, but it is one of those books! But don't let it get in the way of your painting plans: I would never want to let a book, even a great book, get in the way of making your own art.
And that picture is a hoot: maybe in one of your stories for class, the caticorn will finally get her revenge. Beware the wrath of the caticorn! :-)

  6. Hi Samantha! Thank you for adding in the acrylic art compilation! It was a great video with beautiful creations. I have three dogs, so I don't know much about cat behavior. However, I do see a twinkle in Rory's eyes from hanging out with Isabel (or maybe that's just the window light). My mom went back to school herself with four kids and I hope its a comfort to know that she is doing fantastic now. You go, Samantha! Get your education! Cheers!

  7. Hi Samantha! Do you like being a paralegal? I am looking into taking a year off between undergrad and law school, and am thinking that might be a nice way to start life in the legal field. Also, I have cats too and I think Rory doesn't hate it that much! I've seen more dissatisfaction on a cat's face before.

  8. Hello Samantha! I think it is great that you are going back to school to grow even further! Even if it is not for our jobs I think I will always want to take some kind of classes just so I can constantly work my brain. I wish you all the best in school and your art! I have seen those paint pours a lot recently and I think they would be fun to try and also great to decorate your home with. Art that YOU make is so much better than something store bought. I also hope that the cat continues to stay brave.

  9. Hey Samantha!

It's awesome that you're going back to school with a solid goal in mind! Your degree sounds fascinating and seems like it will definitely help you with your career goals. Those paint videos seem really cool, that's such a fun hobby to have! Hope your paint plans go well! Your cat is really cute. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  10. Hello Samantha,
I think that it is so cool that you've decided to go back to school! I wanted to make a point to say that I've never heard of your major before and I think it is very interesting. I am also living with a cat this year and he often times is unamused with the various things we do to make him give a little personality.

  11. Hi Samantha,
I'm interested in what classes you're taking for your major! I'm also an MIS student but that's where I stop with my degree focus. I also like watching people do acrylic pour on YouTube, specifically when Jenna Marbles did it. I hope you have a wonderful semester and don't forget to give yourself some me-time in all of those booked hours!

  12. Hi Samantha! It’s nice to meet you. That’s awesome that you have an idea of what you want to do outside of school. I haven’t heard of e-Discovery before, so I am going to do some research on that. Those paint pouring videos are so relaxing for me to watch, and it is so cool that you do that as a hobby too. I love the photo you included of Isabel and Rory. Good luck with the rest of the semester!
